Signals tune curation across the whole paper. Signals settings showing boosted topics, avoided topics, tone, good-news dial, instructions, and engine choice On the Newsstand plan, custom curation is off. Desks still fill from your sources, ranked by recency. Reader and Publisher use signals when ranking and summarizing stories.

Boost stories about

Add topics you want the paper to prefer. Examples:
  • fusion energy
  • F1
  • Sonoran food
  • antitrust
  • local transit
The app accepts up to 20 boosted interests.

Never show me

Add topics you want demoted or dropped. Examples:
  • celebrity gossip
  • engagement bait
  • spoilers
  • crypto hype
The app accepts up to 20 avoided topics.

Tone

Tone controls the writing voice.

Good-news dial

The good-news dial runs from 0 to 100. Lower values keep the paper closer to hard news. Higher values make room for more optimistic stories and silver linings.

Standing instructions

Standing instructions are free text for the editor. Use them for rules that do not fit into a tag. Examples:
  • Prioritize healthcare policy because I work in a hospital.
  • Skip AI funding announcements unless there is a real product.
  • Prefer local Arizona angles when available.
Limit:
  • 2,000 characters

Engine choice

Publisher can choose an inference engine when the deployment allows it. If no model is selected, the press uses the managed engine for the plan.
